StudioLAB Builds Microcinema at El Capitan

February 11, 2021

StudioLAB is The Walt Disney Studios’ advanced development division for innovation in creative technologies. To add even more magic to Studio releases, StudioLAB is field trialing a private, brandable microcinema that explores the possibilities of an end-to-end Disney experience for small groups of moviegoers.

After six months of build, StudioLAB’s first trial is ready and awaiting its opening — all completed during quarantine, which meant approving decor, architecture, and creative via entirely virtual workflows. It was well worth it! The luxe StudioLAB Lounge is located in the lower lounge of the El Capitan Theatre, housing 10 seats, themed food and merch (coming soon!), custom ambience controls for guests, Dolby Atmos surround sound, and the latest screens by technology innovation partner LG Displays (including a Transparent OLED and a one-of-a-kind 163” MicroLED). From the vinyls on the back walls to the blue screen and props in the interactive photo area, the space is flexible and customizable — and can be reskinned in just 48 hours.

This new concept is constantly evolving based on COVID, presenting an opportunity for new audience experiences as small groups look for the ability to see movies together with their families or quarantine-pods. And when in-person events are no longer a thing of the past, this space is perfect for VIPs, talent, celebrity screenings, and other marketing events.

The microcinema is currently themed to Pixar’s “Soul,” as The Soul Lounge, and can be re-themed for future titles. It’s projected to open once restrictions are lifted for audiences to return to theaters, and work is now beginning on a second Disney StudioLAB Lounge location…coming soon!
